Choosing the right junior cricket bat size

A cricket bat size guide is a useful starting point, but choosing the right junior bat isn't simply about matching a player's height to a number. Weight, pick-up and how comfortable the bat feels in the player's hands are just as important.

Junior bats generally progress through Size 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and Harrow. Depending on the player, it can sometimes be appropriate to move up a size, provided the bat is light enough and the player can comfortably control it.

A bat that is too heavy can make it more difficult for a young player to develop good technique, so we recommend considering the overall feel of the bat rather than buying a larger size simply because they'll “grow into it”.

Hardball or softball cricket bat?

The type of cricket being played is important when choosing a junior bat. Softball cricket bats are suitable for formats using softer cricket balls, while players progressing to hardball cricket will need an appropriate hardball cricket bat.

Our junior hardball range includes different constructions and price points, including laminated and English willow bats. All hardball cricket bats purchased from Boundary Sports have the option of our FREE hand knocking-in service, with approximately 7 additional days required for preparation.

How much should I spend on a junior cricket bat?

There's no single amount every junior player needs to spend. The right choice depends on their age, level of cricket, how regularly they play and your budget.

We stock junior bats across a range of price points, from affordable options for players starting out through to higher-grade junior hardball bats costing around £200.

Rather than simply buying the most expensive bat available, we'd recommend finding the correct combination of size, weight, pick-up and budget for the individual player.

Try junior cricket bats in our Birmingham store

If you're unsure, bring your child into Boundary Sports in Birmingham. We'll measure them against our bat sizing guide, establish your budget and help shortlist suitable bats.

They can handle the bats, compare the weight and balance, test the ping and even face a few throwdowns using a softer bowling machine ball before deciding which bat feels right for them.
