Choosing the right hockey stick length
Hockey stick sizing is a guide rather than an exact science. In store, we'll look at the player's height and measure the stick against the leg to help establish an appropriate length.
For junior players in particular, it's important to choose a stick they can comfortably control rather than simply choosing a longer stick to grow into. As players move into senior sizes, personal preference can also play a part. If you're unsure between lengths, visiting us in store allows you to compare different options and see which feels most natural.
How much should I spend on a hockey stick?
Hockey sticks are available across a wide range of price points, from sticks for juniors and players starting out through to premium sticks designed for experienced players.
As you move through a manufacturer's range, you'll generally see changes in the materials and construction used. Higher-priced sticks will typically use more advanced composite constructions and, where specified by the manufacturer, higher carbon content.
However, not every brand publishes a carbon percentage, and carbon content alone shouldn't determine which stick you choose. Your level of hockey, budget and how the stick actually feels to play with are all important considerations.
Which hockey stick bow should I choose?
The bow describes the curve along the length of a hockey stick and can influence how the stick feels and performs.
More traditional or mid-bow profiles can provide a versatile option for a wide range of skills, while lower bow profiles are often chosen by players looking to develop skills such as 3D play, drag flicking and aerials. Different manufacturers use their own terminology and bow shapes, so two sticks described similarly won't necessarily feel identical.
Rather than choosing a bow simply because it's used by a particular player or associated with a certain position, we'd recommend considering the skills you use most and finding a profile that feels comfortable for your game.
Weight, balance and feel
The specifications only tell part of the story. Two hockey sticks of the same length and similar construction can feel very different once they're in your hands.
Weight distribution, balance and pick-up can all affect how comfortable a stick feels when carrying, receiving and striking the ball. That's why, where possible, we recommend handling a few different sticks rather than making your decision solely from the specifications.
